A Clever Candy

I saw this crazy game over at Tina's blog and, as if I had nothing better to do at 4am, and after my cup of hot Milo, I just had to amuse myself.

All you have to do follow the instructions below, which will amazingly reveal your age without me even asking you using chocolate math!

Go ahead have a go and see! ....

AGE REVEALER CHOCOLATE MATH GAME

It takes less than a minute.
Work this out as you read...

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50 -- I'll wait while you get the calculator

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1759...
If you haven't, add 1758.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number

The first digit of this was your original number
(I.e.., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

The next two numbers are…..

YOUR AGE! (Oh Yes It Is!)

****

Did that freak you out or what!?
I'm sure someone with a good math brain can figure the trick behind this (tell only if you desperately need to bust this kind of "nonsense"), but for the rest of us it's just freaky and funny.
Let me know what you think in comments if you played along :)

p/s- Mmm... makes me feel like another cup of Milo now.

Diarrhoea and Child Growth

Thanks Judy for this in your e-mail.

My friend sent this link about treating diarrhoea in her e-mail and I thought this is really useful for us who have young kids and are constantly caring and worrying about them.

Just to "cut and paste" parts of the story to summerise :

When someone gets diarrhoea, sometimes the solution is so easy, we wonder why anyone has to suffer.

The secret is in rice water.

My mother knew about it. When Dr Albert Winsemius came to Singapore many years ago for a farewell and thank you dinner in his honour, he brought along his wife Aly and his granddaughter, Jolijn. Both women came down with very bad gastroenteritis.. They saw the doctor who gave them medication. It was slow to work.

Mother boiled some rice in lots of water and went to their hotel with two 1.5L bottles of rice water.

Never heard of this cure before. To my surprise, it worked, and they were even able to go out for dinner the next day. Both were exclaiming how the rice water did the trick of making them well again.

It is rice water and not rice, that does the trick. I have found it effective again and again. You take a handful of rice and boil it in a large saucepan with lots of water. Like three or four large glasses. Then you cool that and drink the water.
If you are in a hurry to relieve
the ailing person, take the saucepan off the fire and dunk it in a frying pan or basin of cool water with ice cubes if necessary.

This gives the patient a chance to drink the rice water sooner and cure himself or herself sooner.

When drinking the rice water, make sure there is lots of it. You have to tell the patient that enough water must go in to line your guts from throat to other end, all 10 to 12 metres of it. If you take rice, it stays in the stomach. If you take broth, some of it may go into the small intestine.

But if you take rice water, it will carry rice grains to every inch of your small and large intestine to the end where the problem is.

We always say "Eat rice".
Now we can also tell others, "Drink rice."
:)
Have a good week.

Ooo... Yet another: Proximidade Award

Thank you to Ling who gave me this award.

She google the word "Proximidade". It is a Portuguese word which means "proximity" or "nearness"- suppose it means this blog or blogging makes us feel close together ?

They all are charmed with the blogs, where in the majority of its aims are to show the marvels and to do friendship;
there are persons who are not interested when we give them a prize and then they help to cut these bows; do we want that they are cut or that they propagate?
Then let’s try to give more attention to them! So with this prize we must deliver it to 8 bloggers that in turn must make the same thing and put this text.

So here is the list of Award - it goes to:
Ann
Fern
Florence
Hissychick

The "If" Tag

5"If"s that would have made your life somewhat different today.

Rules:
1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. List 5 things that could make your life very different should it come true.
3. Tag 5 other people.

1. If Gadget-daddy and I had not courted so long we'd probably be having our 5th or 6th kid now.

I had always enjoyed being in a 5-kids family and love kids. Gadget-daddy loves them too, and if we had started out having kids earlier, I guess I'd be carrying maybe our 5th or 6th one now. Of course I can't imagine what a circus it'd be, but it'd also be heaps of fun.

2. If Gadget-daddy had gotten posted to Belgium right after he graduated, I suppose I'd be ice-skating, skiing and speaking French today.

He had a job offer, they really wanted him, but the work permit could not go through. It was quite exciting at that time for us to think of staying in Europe, but my Dad was also getting pretty sick at that time, so I must say God works everything out well for all of us somehow. The more important things anyway.

3. If I we were staying on our own, I'd probably be cooking more like Lia. :)

Lots of home made bread and milk in the fridge. Healthy meals baked in ovens and easy recipes to whip up. I'd do this one thing I learnt from my MiL: boil a good pot of soup which is used as base for cooking vege or making rice porridge or eating noodle soup. She even uses the soup to cook our rice in sometimes so that it's extra tasty and nutritious.

4. If I had insisted on changing school in my pre-U days, I would never had met Gadget-daddy.

I wanted to do English Literature and heard it was not offered in St. John's (where Gadget-daddy and I met). But due to government's red tape, I was informed that I could only make a school transfer after school strted, and that it would take up to 6 months to actually change school. Too much time wasted, I figured and stuck to where I was. And in the end, I did manage to do English Lit in St.John's, though it was more like a private tutorials with a couple of friends and some students from 2 other schools. Well, the rest is history.

5. If I had not stopped, I'd have ended under a bus.

Here's the story:
I was taking the public bus to school. I usually head out while it's still dark, abotu 30 mins before sunrise. One morning, as I had cossed a road, I made a jump for the curb, as I saw a bus speeding down the road. As I jumped up, my school bag's strap snapped and my bag fell onto the road. I was going make a jump for it when I felt something* made me stop short. Right at the edge of the curb when I stopped, I saw my school bag crushed under the bus. That could have been me. I was actually in a state of shock, and just picked up my bag - what it had become, and hugged it the rest of the way. Only when I got to school I broke into tears when I told a few friends what happened. Everything was wet from a crushed water bottle I had in my bag. Amazingly the calculator in the bag still worked, despite a crumpled durface.

So what are your 5 "if"s:
Ann
Mummy-yeoh
Jlow
Mumsgather
Hissychick
?

* Actually I would say I felt it was the voice of God that rang an alarm in me that said STOP, while my human instict was to jump and grab my bag.

Tagged: With Memories

Got tagged by Ann.

1. In which month and year did you meet your husband for the first time?

Maybe August, 1990. Can't remember the month, but remembered the incident very clearly: It was at a Christian Fellowship meeting in St. John's and I was taking attendance.

2. In which month and year did you two officially starting dating?
17 February, 1994. After I finished my last assignment for that term, end of my first year in UM.

3. Where was the first dating place the two of you went to?
Erm.... can't remember...we were always together, like he would come pick me, or spend some time at my place or me at his place, involving family members, but mostly with other friends. How to count as date?
Maybe my 21st Birthday, but that was an accidental date, and we weren't officially dating... He came to take me out for dinner. Was suppose to bring a friend along, as a surprise, but could not contact her.

4. What was the most touching thing he did for you when you two were still dating?
Set up ICQ for me and patiently taught me how to use it before going off to finish his studies in UK.

5. How about after your marriage?
His presence and support during my father's funeral.

6. Share your lowest period of your life with him.
When I was going through a very heart-breaking experience...he never stayed away from me but braved all the storms with me and sometimes from me.
And also during my miscarriage in March 2008.

7. Share your happiest moment with him?
When we found out I was pregnant, for all 4 times!!.

8. Share your saddest moment with him.
The day he broke my heart.

9. Share your angriest moment with him.
There was an issue we had to sort out and he fell asleep. I woke him up with a bash of a pillow.

10. Share your funniest moment with him.
That time we went ice-skating at The Mines and he was suppose to pull me along for a "ride". Suddenly he went behind me and pushed me instead. Eventually I lost control and we both crashed on the ice.

11. Share your most frustrated moment with him.
When I couldn't get him to confirm a date for something I feel major. That was a project at my last work place which he volunteered to help. It was very stressful.

12. Lastly, when was the last time you two hold hands and walk under the moonlight, like how you used to do?
Moonlight...is kinda hard to come by as we are not usually outdoors by the time the moon is out. But we hold hand as often as we can, even in bed.

What about you?
Infant

Update on 5 Sept 2008:
Corrected the dates on Q1 and Q2.

Tagged, Again.

I got tagged by Hissychick and Lia. The same one I did before, but never mind, to write 6 random things about myself.

Here are the rules …
1. Link to the person who “tagged” you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post.
5. Let each person know that they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know your entry is up.

1. I can draw considerably well.

My sisters and I used to draw on the walls in the old apartment we stayed in in the heart of town. A rented place. It sure was a nightmare to my parents, trying in vain to keep our hands off the walls. When we got older, I lived there from birth till 6, and moved the whole place was repainted. Lost are our early art works. We fondly called those walls our art-gallery. All the training we did in our childhood earned us popularity among friends during art classes. hahaha...

2. I have always admired patience and perseverance in people.

Hence some of the people I really admire and look up to and have very high regards for are my former teachers, those from my kindy years till pre-U years. They have been on the job year after year and never fail to help, teach, advise and encourage their students year after year. Their job, as far as career prospects were concern sucked, yet they never took it out on us innocent kiddos who could really make their life so stressful. hats off to them! (These teachers really added to my thoughts of becoming an educator myself...but looks like I did not quite make it there.)

3. I studied in a local Uni. Never thought I'd actually make (for those of you who know how tough our Pre-U is and also the qualifying grades), but it was here that I really learnt the ugly side of Malaysian's inwardly-turned eyes. I never knew what racial polarization was until I was there. I never even used that phrase in any of my conversations before that. Talk about culture shock for foreign students, I really felt foreign. Those were my years of real awakenings of what social and political concerns were. In protest, I actually refused to speak any Mandarine (the little that that I know) and used only Malay and English, and to some of the girls who were very shy, or from Penang and Perak, I spoke northern Hokkien.

4. Brainwashed - in a good way.

This has so much to do with all the ingraining of my Alma-Mater of my Secondary school years. I studied for 5 years in St. Mary's Girls School and the 2 years of pre-U in St. John's Secondary School. Both schools were heritage schools, started by missionaries, and moral values, Godly values, and civic consciousness were in the air we breathed for the many hours we were in school. So this was something very different in my sisters and I compared to my brothers and other family members. It's also very non- Chinese mindset that thinks only of taking care of yourself or your own family first. Contributing to the community or doing charity comes only when it's worth it or not too costly.

5. The oldest friend I have and still am in touch with is one I knew from Kindy. We were 6 then. Today she has 3 kids and stays 10 minutes from my place. My other best friend (next to Gadget-daddy) is one I knew from when we were 10. Todate, we still meet for lunch at least 10 times in a year. She's married with a baby boy and stays 10 minutes from my moms.

6. I loved school. I was blessed with many good friends and very good teachers. One friend in particular has a very volatile kind of character. We brought the best and worst out of each other. Because of her I often found myself in leadership positions (though I did not always handle the pressure well) but I had a very full and meaningful 7 years of school in my teenage years.

Hmmm... Looks like this one has a lot to do with school for me.

OK. I tag:
